The main functions of the division are carrying out research works on the above collections and publishing them on various subjects, based on Ethnology and Archaeology as well as mounting Permanent, temporary and Mobile Exhibitions and Presentation of Educational programs on various subjects in the fields of Ethnology.

The division of anthropology focuses the attention on cultural issues of Sri Lanka community. A huge collection of cultural objects more than 600 are maintained by the anthropology division. The collection has been categorized as bellows.
