Conservation Division


The Conservation Section of the Department of National Museums was established in 1966. It has a staff of 13 including 4 Conservation officers.

The main functions of the Section are the providing of advice regarding
Preventive Conservation, Curative Conservation and storage of the artifacts of the Ethnology, Anthropology Sections & carrying out Conservation work where necessary.


In addition following duties are performed by the section.

(i) Carry out the above functions in branch Museums & School Science Museums in the country.
(ii) Library Conservation- Repair of damaged books, paintings magazines, maps & ola leaf manuscripts and carrying out fumigation.
(iii) Providing of information & educating the researchers, university students & school children regarding preventive & curative Conservation.
(iv) Conduct of workshops, training programmes & lectures on conservation to private museums & members of the public.
(v) Pest & insect control work in the Museum, branch Museums and School Science Museums.
(vi) Control of weeds (specially ficus Genus plants) which are damaging the buildings and walls of the Museum complex.
