Ethnology

Serving as a window into Sri Lanka's rich cultural and historical heritage it houses an extensive collection of around 125,000 artifacts, that spanning from the prehistoric era to the late 19th century.

Anthropology

With a carefully curated collection of around 5,000 artifacts, this division provides a fascinating insight into the daily lives, traditions, and beliefs of Sri Lanka’s diverse communities. The collection celebrates human ingenuity, creativity, and cultural expression.

Botany

The Botany Division of the Department of National Museums is a center for the exploration and celebration of Sri Lanka’s diverse plant heritage with a collection of approximately 3,500 specimens.

Entomology

The Entomology Division is a hub for the study and appreciation of Sri Lanka’s incredible insect diversity. Housing an extensive collection of approximately 130,000 specimens, along with around 400 Type specimens. This division highlights the island’s rich biodiversity of insects focusing on Arthropods and Arachnids, including some of the most remarkable creatures that inhabit our ecosystems.

Zoology

With a comprehensive collection of approximately 75,000 specimens, this division celebrates the island’s rich biodiversity, encompassing both invertebrates and vertebrates that thrive across its unique ecosystems. Featuring around 400 Type specimens, this collection provides essential reference material for scientific research and species identification.

Geology

The Geology Division of the Department of National Museums is a fascinating gateway to Sri Lanka’s prehistoric past. With an extensive collection of approximately 10,000 specimens, this division offers a unique opportunity to explore the island’s ancient biodiversity through its remarkable fossil collection.

Publication

The Education and Publication Division of the Department of National Museums is dedicated to fostering knowledge and engagement through educational activities and museum publications, bridging the gap between Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and the community.

Exhibition Designing

The Exhibition Designing Division of the Department of National Museums is responsible for the planning, designing, and execution of museum gallery exhibitions, transforming historical, cultural, and scientific narratives into immersive and engaging experiences for museum visitors.

Conservation

The Conservation Laboratory of the Department of National Museums is dedicated to the study, preservation, and restoration of cultural artifacts, ensuring that Sri Lanka’s rich heritage is safeguarded for future generations.

Photography Unit

The Photography Division of the Department of National Museums was established in 1950.
